The Best Leaders are Learners

When you think about Warren Buffet, Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates what first comes to mind?....................................

Yes, they are all billionaires. They are also all avid readers. Warren Buffett is now famously quoted as saying “Read 500 pages like this every day,” while reaching toward a stack of manuals and papers. “That’s how knowledge works. It builds up, like compound interest. All of you can do it, but I guarantee not many of you will do it.”

When I think about the best leaders I've ever worked for - they all have one thing in common. They loved to learn. One of my favorite leaders after each check-in would share the list of books she was reading.

My goal last year was to read 52 books. While the number pressured me keep reading, I must admit, that I snuck in some small books with the heavy, longer ones to meet my number goal.

This year my goals is more strategic. I am picking books (and certifications, such as the LinkedIn Learning and IBM AI certifications) that meet the needs of the clients I serve. From books on candor such as "Radical Candor" by Kim Scott and "The Right Kind of Wrong" by Amy Edmonson to "Bud to Boss" to help serve emerging leaders to "Switch", "Changes" and "Change - How to Turn Uncertainty into Opportunity" to address change management.

I've included a picture of some of my favorite books read in 2023.

Reflection Question: What is your leadership learning plan?
